Caregiver burnout has been defined as “a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude, from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. Burnout can occur when caregivers don’t get the help they need, or if they try and do more than they are able physically and financially. Caregivers who are burned out may experience fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression”.

Causes of Burnout

  • Unreasonable expectations put on you, by yourself and/or by others around you.
  • Lack of control over money and personal support resources for your family member or friend.
  • Lack of coordination of care in the health care system.
  • Role confusion, like, for example, simultaneously being an adult child and parent to an aging parent.
  • Apparent helplessness of your family member or friend’s condition.

When you’re burnt out, it’s easy and understandable to want to quit on any given day. But, that usually isn’t an option.
